Last Year’s Motorway Vignettes only Valid for a Few Days

Annual national and county motorway vignettes for 2024 expire on January 31, meaning that next weekend motorists who use last year’s vignettes will be fined.
Autopalyamatrica.hu warns that anyone who forgets that from February 1 2025 annual vignettes are valid will be subject to a heavy fine. At the beginning of the year, not only the price of vignettes has increased, but also the fines.
The surcharge is HUF 26,640 within 60 days and HUF 91,780 after 60 days. If you buy the wrong vignette, you will have to pay the surcharge difference in addition to the correct vignette. The surcharge difference is HUF 14,900 within 60 days and HUF 47,180 after 60 days.
Based on trends in recent years, the portal says that the proportion of online purchases is likely to rise further this year. In addition, they expect more people to opt for the annual national and annual county vignettes, while monthly and weekly ones will be bought by fewer people. One reason for the latter is the introduction of daily vignettes.
Meanwhile, the proportion of motorway-related fines is still very high: statistics show that around 1 million surcharges are imposed each year and a further 1.5 million cases are referred to foreign enforcement agencies.
According to a survey carried out by the portal last November, almost all respondents said that inattention led to unauthorized use of the roads, and in many cases lack of information also contributed to the high amounts. Many people have accumulated fines because they believed that their weekly vignette is still valid, for instance, or because they did not realize they had made a mistake.
According to data from the National Toll Payment Service, the number of e-vignette purchases continued to rise in 2024, with more than 15 million toll entitlements bought by road users. This is a few hundred thousand more than in previous years, but within this figure, the proportion of annual national and annual county vignette purchases is increasing (plus 4 and 10 percent respectively), while the proportion of monthly and weekly vignettes is decreasing (minus 6 and 15 percent respectively).
