Lego’s Nyíregyháza Factory Is the Most Sustainable

Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of Lego, made a special mention of the Hungarian factory in his annual review presentation on Tuesday: Lego’s factory in Nyíregyháza (northeastern Hungary) has become their most sustainable plant due to outstanding solar investments, Világgazdaság reports.
The annual review also revealed that last year the toy manufacturer was able to beat its competitors and become profitable in a weakening market: Lego’s compound annual growth rate was 13 percent against its competitors, and it achieved a 10 percent (46.5 million euros) increase compared to the previous year. He explained the outstanding revenue and their ability to stay at the forefront by the fact that their collaborations have grown and strengthened their reputation in the global market. Among the collaborations, he highlighted work with Fortnite, Formula 1 and Nike.
Christiansen reported that of the seven Lego factories, the biggest capacity expansions have been in Mexico, China and Hungary.
Globally, they have expanded their solar capacity by 43 percent, with the one in Nyíregyháza being the most sustainable factory,
the CEO said.
He noted that 30 percent of the products manufactured are already packaged in environmentally friendly paper, and he called the program to completely renew the material of Lego bricks a success: half of the Lego sets sold in 2024 will be made of the more sustainable material.

As previously reported by Hungary Today, Hungarian toy market generated a turnover of around 120 billion forints (300 million euros) in 2024. Regio Játék took the leading position among Hungarian toy distributors last year, with a 10 percent increase compared to the previous year. The company sold a total of 8.15 million toys last year, most of them board games, Lego sets, and cars and other vehicles, but creative and development toys, as well as plush toys were also popular.
They also expect moderate growth in the domestic toy market in 2025, driven by the growing demand for toys among young adults. This age group is mainly interested in board games, AI-based games, and “Kidult” games (primarily for adults in the classic sense), and manufacturers are continuously expanding their offerings in these categories.
