Majestic 23-Meter Silver Fir Chosen as the Nation’s Christmas Tree

Continuing a long-standing tradition, the ‘nation’s Christmas tree’ for Budapest’s Kossuth Square has been chosen. A pine from the Nyírség region (northeastern Hungary) will serve as the country’s Christmas tree, the Press Office of the National Assembly revealed on Tuesday.

Throughout the year, offers have been continuously arriving at the Office from all over the country. Of the 31 pine trees, 18 were tall enough to be examined on site, and several from last year’s selection remained in the running, they wrote.

This year, the largest pine tree in the town of Ibrány—a silver fir reaching almost 23 meters in height—has been chosen.

The selection was based on the appropriate height (approximately 20 meters or taller), proportional shape, and sufficiently dense foliage. After that, they had to consider safe accessibility, the location of power lines, the space needed for the crane and transport vehicle, and how the giant pine tree would withstand the rigors of cutting, lifting, and securing. The decision was made after considering the transport routes, they wrote.

The family, who wish to remain anonymous, decided last year, at the suggestion of their grandchildren, to offer the pine tree that had grown in their yard over the past 40 years to the Office of the National Assembly. As they wrote, they were filled with great joy and pride that their silver fir tree, planted decades ago with a clod of earth, will adorn Kossuth Square in the capital, decked out in festive lights, as the nation’s Christmas tree from the first Sunday of Advent until Epiphany. They have always admired the Christmas tree erected in front of the Parliament building in previous years, and this year it will fill them all with special pride, their statement reads.
