A section of the G runway used by aircraft is to be completely renewed and equipped with new road lighting, Magyar Építők reports.
The operator the Liszt Ferenc International Airport published a tender in the EU’s public procurement notice at the end of 2024, inviting bids for the renewal of the G runway. The deadline for submitting tenders for the works is February 11.
According to the invitation to tender, the complete renewal works are to be carried out
on the section of the G runway behind the R110-R117 stands,
the TWY A1-TWY B1 junction
and part of the B1 runway.
The contractor will have to completely demolish the existing asphalt pavement of the designated area.
The new basalt concrete pavement will be built over 17,000 square meters.
The basalt concrete pavement will have an exceptional resistance compared with conventional asphalt or concrete pavements: it is resistant to carbamide solution used for de-icing, for instance.

The development also includes the modernization of the road lighting. This involves the dismantling of the existing columns in the work area and the installation of six new lighting columns.
The apron will be rebuilt, that will mean that the lighting substructures will be located under the pavement, and the track for these will also have to be designed. The installation of the lighting substructures will include the installation of almost 4,380 meters of protective conduit and more than 2 kilometers of primary cable. The procurement notice also specified that the contractor would be responsible for the installation of a visual navigation aid system for aircraft on the site.
Fact
As reported by Hungary Today, after almost 20 years, the Liszt Ferenc International Airport is back in majority state ownership. Following more than a year of intensive negotiations, the sale and purchase agreement of Budapest Airport Ltd. was signed in June 2024.
Following the handover, Economy Minister Márton Nagy announced that the airport is facing major developments. These include, for instance, a new terminal and service facilities. The new terminal is expected to be complete by 2032. Márton Nagy said that the government’s goal is to increase the number of passengers from the current 15 million to nearly 20 million by 2030.
