The government has decided to begin expanding the Békéscsaba Airport as soon as possible in cooperation with the Hungarian Defense Forces, announced János Lázár, Minister of Construction and Transport, during his visit to the eastern Hungarian city on Thursday.
During his visit to Békéscsaba, the politician said that the government had decided to begin expanding the airport in cooperation with the Hungarian Defense Forces in the near future, as its services are currently insufficient. “We will build an airport with greater capacity, but of course we must first discuss this with local residents and the city council,” the minister explained. The aim of the investment in the rural airport is to promote the economic development of Békés County.
The minister also announced that the investment is so far advanced that it is already in the tendering phase (open competition). He said that ten billion forints (26 million euros) would have to be spent on the investment in order for Békéscsaba to have an airport that serves the industry settling here.
Békéscsaba Airport will handle both passenger and cargo traffic, but it will not be a commercial airport, “which means that no Wizz Air planes will land there,”
the minister said.
Operated by Békés Airport Kft., Békéscsaba Airport is the only paved, long airport in Békés County and is located between Békéscsaba and Gyula, next to the main road No. 44. The airport is divided into two areas: a commercial airport and a sports airport.
As Világgazdaság recalled, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in September that the future of Békés County looks very different today than it did a year or two ago.
Developments in recent years have enabled the region to catch up in terms of infrastructure, paving the way for major international investments.
The government believes that the development of air transport and related infrastructure components can increase the attractiveness of a particular region for investors and its economic performance. Due to Hungary’s geographical and geopolitical situation, it is necessary to set a direction for airport development that serves economic and social development in a rational and efficient manner while strengthening competitiveness.
