MEP Slams European Parliament for Blocking Erasmus+ Access Over Politics

“The European Parliament has once again let Hungarian university students down, as the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) voted to support the European Commission in making the return to the Erasmus+ program part of political blackmail,” said Annamária Vicsek, Fidesz-KDNP Member of the European Parliament (MEP).

The MEP reported that the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education voted on Tuesday on the report on European University Associations. Annamária Vicsek emphasized that the report was intended to strengthen cooperation between universities, but instead, the left-wing majority used the text to attack Hungary again.

She said that her amendment calling on the European Commission to “stop the unlawful and discriminatory exclusion of Hungarian university students from the Erasmus+ program” was rejected by the left-wing majority of the EP committee.

Instead of standing up for Hungarian university students, they joined the European Commission in making their return to the program part of political blackmail,”

she pointed out.

She emphasized that other elements of the report are also concerning.

Among these, the Fidesz MEP highlighted that the text calls for a common “European diploma,” which, in her words, calls into question the sovereignty of member states and would impose ideological conditions for participation.

She found it particularly worrying that higher education institutions in candidate countries, such as Serbia, can only join the initiative if they “comply with” certain Brussels values, while minority higher education remains completely invisible.

“This is not about academic freedom, but about centralization. That is why I did not support the adoption of the report,” Annamária Vicsek concluded.

Fact

Some Hungarian universities are facing restrictions in participating in the Erasmus+ program due to governance transparency concerns raised by the European Commission. These restrictions, which also impact the Horizon Europe program, have led to discussions about potential changes to the Hungarian higher education model and ongoing negotiations with the EU.
