Milestone Reached in Energy Supply, with Gas to Come from Türkiye

A historic day in Hungarian-Turkish energy cooperation is approaching with April 1, as natural gas supplies from Türkiye to Hungary will begin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced on his Facebook page on Monday.

In accordance with the agreement, 275 million cubic meters of natural gas will be delivered in the coming months, making Hungary the first non-neighboring country to which Türkiye will export natural gas within a few days.

Türkiye has always played an important role in the security of Hungary’s energy supply, but so far only as a transit route, whereas from now on it will also be a source country,”

said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

Fact

The Hungarian MVM and the Turkish energy company BOTAŞ agreed on the purchase of almost 300 million cubic meters of gas in August 2023. In the Ministry of Energy’s announcement on the agreement, it was emphasized that Türkiye’s role in maintaining stability is even stronger than before, as it hosts an alternative, strategically important diversification of European gas supplies.

“We are also strengthening our cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, as the new nuclear power plant in Türkiye, which will soon be operational, will be built using the same technology as the new Paks plant. This will also benefit from the experience gained during the Turkish construction. At the same time, Turkish experts will also help their Hungarian colleagues in the technical inspection of equipment with a long production time,” the Minister noted.
