Ministers Accuse the ICC of Political Bias in Netanyahu Case

International Criminal Court

Government leaders have sharply criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC) decision that Hungary failed to fulfill its obligations under its founding treaty when it did not cooperate in the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, stated that this move clearly demonstrates that the ICC has completely lost its prestige and that its decisions are “essentially motivated by petty political revenge.” In a Facebook post, he emphasized:

Political goals and ideologies have no place in international judicial bodies.”

He believes that the ICC has definitively deviated from its original purpose and become a political organization, and Hungary’s withdrawal from this body was the right decision.

These institutions should not represent political interests, but provide an appropriate international platform for negotiation between disputing parties.”

János Bóka, Minister for European Affairs, also condemned the ICC’s move, stating: “The court has lost its moral compass and become a political organization, siding with terrorists.”

In his view, the decision to refer Hungary to the ICC’s Assembly of States Parties is legally questionable, meaningless, and further undermines the body’s authority.

Hungary cannot be part of a legal or political community with such an institution,”

he pointed out.

Bóka also stated that Hungary has no intention of arresting Israel’s democratically elected and legitimate prime minister in the future, as this would be contrary to our country’s internal legal order and the general rules of international law.

According to the Ministers, the ICC’s actions do not contribute to peace in the Middle East or to reducing international tensions. Bóka emphasized: “The activities of the International Criminal Court have so far contributed nothing to these goals.”
