Minority Party Celebrates 35 Years of Representing Transylvania’s Hungarian Community

The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) marked its 35th anniversary with a celebration of its pivotal role in representing the Hungarian community in Romania.

Hunor Kelemen, RMDSZ’s President, highlighted that since its foundation on December 25, 1989, RMDSZ has continuously defended the political and community interests of Hungarians in Romania, ensuring their representation in local government, parliament, and the European Parliament. The politician emphasized the alliance’s rare achievement of enduring and growing stronger, despite political changes in the region.

RMDSZ continues to grow stronger,” Mr. Kelemen noted, citing the alliance’s success in recent elections.

RMDSZ has been a driving force in the development of Transylvania and the advancement of Hungarian communities. The party’s leader reaffirmed the alliance’s focus on regional development, including transport infrastructure, housing, and education. “The development of Transylvania remains our priority,” he said, emphasizing support for lagging regions, the construction of motorways, and the Bucharest-Cluj Napoca (Kolozsvár)-Budapest high-speed railway.

Mr. Kelemen also highlighted RMDSZ’s significant political accomplishments, notably its strengthened role in the Romanian government.

The Hungarian minority party now leads two important ministries, with Barna Tánczos appointed as Romania’s Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, marking the first time a Hungarian has held such a position in Romania’s democratic history.

RMDSZ is also committed to responsible governance, with Mr. Kelemen calling for reduced state burdens on citizens and the “slimming down” of the state.

In closing, Hunor Kelemen expressed gratitude for RMDSZ’s continued trust and vowed to maintain its community-organizing power, ensuring the protection and representation of Hungarians in Romania. “Thank you for your trust over the past 35 years, and you can count on us in the future,” he concluded.
