MOL Discovers New Oil Field in Transdanubia

MOL has discovered a new oil field in the Transdanubian region (western Hungary), near Somogysámson. The oil was discovered at a depth of 1,250 meters during exploratory drilling in December last year. Based on tests, the well in the Somogysámson oil field is capable of producing 1,200 barrels per day, the Hungarian multinational oil and gas company announced on Tuesday.

The drilling of the new well, named Som-8, at the Somogysámson oil field started on November 25, 2024 and was completed on Christmas Day after 33 days. Based on stratigraphic tests carried out until March 2025, the well is now proven to be capable of producing 1,200 barrels of oil per day, which will be transported to the Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta.

The statement sent to MTI quoted Zsombor Marton, leader of MOL Group’s Exploration and Production division, as saying that after the exploration successes of recent years, another new oil field has been discovered, this time in Transdanubia, where they last discovered oil over a decade ago.

We are discovering more and more previously unknown hydrocarbon deposits and further strengthening the country’s security of supply:

with the Vecsés and Tura oil deposits and the East Hungarian natural gas fields, we have reached a 5-year peak in domestic production,”

he said.

György Bacsa, Managing Director of MOL Hungary, pointed out that “as a country isolated from the sea, we are largely supplied with oil by pipeline, through intermediaries. It is clear that we must reduce Hungary’s import vulnerability by all means available. We will continue our investments and will continue to do our utmost to maintain and, if possible, even increase production,” he said.

The company added that MOL plans to invest around HUF 150 billion (EUR 377 million) in oil and gas production in Hungary over the next five years.

The statement also reported that

MOL has nearly 1,300 oil and gas wells in Hungary.

In 2024, MOL provided 47 percent of the domestic production of crude oil (almost 600,000 tons) and nearly 90 percent of the natural gas (almost 1.5 billion cubic meters). Hungary accounts for 39 percent of the MOL Group’s total oil and gas production. The Som-8 well’s daily oil production of around 1,200 barrels represents one percent of the MOL Group’s total hydrocarbon production.

As part of its international portfolio, the MOL Group has oil and gas exploration and production assets in nine countries, with eight of them having production operations. In 2024, the company produced an average of 93.8 thousand barrels of oil equivalent of hydrocarbons per day in these countries combined.

In order to maintain the production level of at least 90 thousand barrels per day over the next 5 years, as set out in its strategy, MOL intends to further strengthen its international portfolio and develop additional strategic partnerships. To this end, the company has recently signed cooperation agreements with the KazMunayGas (Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas company), State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO).
