László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly, congratulated Roberta Metsola, the newly elected President of the European Parliament (EP), and asked for her cooperation in preventing “anti-democratic procedures.”
In his letter, the Hungarian politician emphasized the importance of strengthening parliamentarianism in Europe and the role of national parliaments in EU decision-making.
Mr. Kövér expressed the Hungarian public’s shock over the EP’s actions, claiming they violated parliamentary democracy and European law by not allocating vice-presidential or committee posts to the third-strongest political group. “The MEPs of the Fidesz-KDNP coalition, which has governed Hungary since 2010 with the constitutional mandate of the electorate, all voted for President Metsola and are also baffled by the undemocratic decision of the EP.”
He highlighted hopes that the new EP would move beyond past practices of stigmatizing and excluding parties or representatives with differing opinions.
The Speaker of the National Assembly stressed that in the Hungarian Parliament, parties hold parliamentary offices in proportion to their seats since the first free elections in 1990.
László Kövér questioned whether the EP’s “exclusionary and divisive situation” should be a model for national parliaments. “Any politician who has confidence in the democratic values of European representation and the much-vaunted rule of law must ask whether the EP leadership considers this ‘exclusionary and divisive situation’ to be a good practice that national parliaments should follow.”
He criticized the attacks on conservative groups linked to differing opinions on the “Slavic fratricidal war” at the EU’s borders. “The EU was created for peace, as EU politicians often say, and we are convinced that the European Parliament’s resolution condemning the Hungarian prime minister’s efforts for peace is not worthy of this.”
Mr. Kövér warned that continuing discriminatory tendencies would weaken the EU’s problem-solving capacity. He called for Metsola’s cooperation to prevent the EP’s “undemocratic” procedures.
