The National Film Institute (NFI) was the first to present an immersive dome at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the institute told MTI on Tuesday.
The announcement quoted Csaba Káel, Government Commissioner for the Development of the Hungarian Film Industry and President of the NFI, who said at the dome’s opening that “it was not an easy task to bring something new to the most important showcase of animation, but in the end we succeeded: in cooperation with the Hungarian House of Music, we brought the first dome to Annecy, where we are presenting immersive works by Hungarian and foreign artists to the public.”
The festival’s new venue is a great success, with sold out tickets to the screenings. It is great pleasure that, in addition to the unprecedented heritage and current talent of Hungarian animation, we are also able to showcase the format of the future,”
added Csaba Káel.

The NFI is presenting 80 Hungarian films, exhibitions, video clips, and professional events at the festival throughout the week. Among other things, the Hunimation Hits the Street exhibition opened in Annecy at the weekend, where 23 iconic heroes of Hungarian animation, from Kockásfülű nyúl (The Rabbit with the Checkered Ears) to Frakk and Macskafogó’s Lusta Dick (Lazy Dick from Cat City), can be seen at various locations around the city. The exhibition was conceived by Dániel Huszár and realized in collaboration with the AA1 Hungarian Association of Animated Artists.

A retrospective selection of 61 restored classics, the Sándor Reisenbüchler exhibition, and the Daliás idők (Heroic Times) exhibition offer a taste of the rich traditions of Hungarian animation. In 1985, József Gémes’s film was the first feature-length film to receive the festival’s main prize, the Annecy Crystal.
At the Annecy film market, MIFA, the Hungarian stand will welcome international professionals with innovative professional programs. The patron of MIFA Campus is Áron Gauder, a multiple Annecy award winner, who will hold a master class for the festival audience.
Additionally, Hunimation.com, the first English-language professional website and database on the Hungarian animation industry, was recently launched, the Hunimation Magazine was published, and a video showcasing the diversity of the industry was created from 75 works by 24 Hungarian studios to the melody of Hungarian dances.
The festival, which runs until Sunday, pays tribute to 111 years of Hungarian animation, showcasing Hungary’s film industry, its creators, rich heritage, studios, schools, and latest talents.
