The latest CAF tram arrived in the Hungarian capital from Spain early Tuesday morning, announced the Budapest Transport Center (BKK).
They emphasized that since last October, units of the previously ordered fleet of 51 trams, which are currently under production, have been continuously arriving. Thanks to this, by the end of 2026, the proportion of low-floor trams in the capital could increase from the current 30% to 40%.
Fact
In February 2023, the Hungarian government approved the final option of Budapest’s 2014 tram procurement contract, allowing the city to purchase 51 new low-floor trams with EU and government funding. The order includes 46 standard-length and 5 extra-long, 56-meter trams. In 2023 Dávid Vitézy, currently Chair of the Committee for Transport, Climate Action, and Urban Development, announced that this is the city’s largest tram replacement program since the introduction of the Combino trams in the early 2000’s.
The new trams will undergo mandatory trial runs and official approval procedures.
In the early phase, all new CAF trams will “meet passengers” on the Buda interconnected tram network.
This is because the Budafok depot is the home base of the Spanish low-floor trams which also serves as the CAF warranty service center.

The renewal of the vehicle fleet makes it possible for more low-floor trams to operate on lines where they already run. From the end of 2025, this means
more comfortable, low-floor, air-conditioned trams could appear on lines 1, 14, 42, 50, and 69, among others.
Additionally, modern trams are expected to appear on the lines of the 2, 23, and 24 families, as well as on line 62A following the inclusion of line 51A—provided European Union funding is available for the necessary infrastructure upgrades, BKK said.
BKK also announced that they are already working on launching a tender that could bring more than a hundred new, modern trams to the capital.
