The call for proposals for the establishment of field-protecting shelterbelts, tree rows, and wooded pastures has been published, and Hungarian farmers can submit their applications starting April 16. As part of the National Tree Planting Program, the government is giving billions of forints to help create new forests. However, because of legal reasons, farmers can still receive area-based support for them under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), reported Világgazdaság.
The Hungarian government is dedicated to helping farmers adapt to climate change. A new funding opportunity under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), called “Establishment, maintenance, and upkeep of agroforestry systems” (code: KAP-RD21-RD22-1-25), supports this goal. Farmers can apply for it from mid-April to next March.
The funding aims to protect farmland, reduce the impacts of climate change, and boost biodiversity, thus helping promote more sustainable farming.
Within the framework of the National Tree Planting Program, 64 billion forints (157 million euros) are allocated for the establishment of new forests, and this new support provides an additional 5 billion forints (12 million euros) to expand the shelterbelt system.
The newly created green plantings do not legally qualify as forests and remain classified as agricultural land, meaning area-based subsidies are still available for them. With this solution, the Hungarian government aims to actively encourage farmers to establish and maintain tree vegetation over larger areas in order to restore habitat diversity, retain water, and protect against erosion.
These elements support the maintenance of agricultural production volumes in a changing climate.
The greening of Hungarian settlements also continues this year, with ten thousand avenue trees to be planted. Municipalities in towns with fewer than 10,000 residents can apply for this support.
