New EU Border Registration System Introduced at Budapest Airport

The European Union has introduced a new border registration system, the Entry/Exit System (EES) for the registration of non-EU citizens traveling for short stays. The measure has been introduced uniformly and is mandatory at all border crossing points in 29 European countries with the aim of strengthening internal security in the Schengen area.

At Liszt Ferenc International Airport, implementation will take place gradually, having started on November 18, 2025. The regulation only affects passengers with non-EU passports, who may experience temporarily longer wait times during border control.

The EES is used to register non-EU citizens traveling for a short stay—that is, for a maximum of 90-days within a 180-day period—each time they cross the external border of one of the 29 European countries using the system.

Budapest Airport has been working closely with the authorities for several months to prepare for the its introduction, and all parties are doing their utmost to ensure that passenger traffic at the airport continues to run smoothly, Budapest Airport announced in a statement.

Budapest Airport is helping to ensure the smooth running of the process by publishing official information materials provided by the European Union, available on its website, with airport-specific frequently asked questions and answers, as well as by increasing the number of staff on site.

There are no changes to the border crossing process for passengers with EU passports.
