New Fixed Cameras Aim to Transform Speed Control

A new, previously unused speed camera, the TraffiCapture-Lite (TC-Lite), could appear on the roads within a few weeks. The device has already passed police protocol tests and is currently undergoing the Authorization Office’s standardization and type approval process. The device will operate in “penalty mode,” meaning that in addition to measuring speed, it will automatically transmit the data for fines to be issued.

Tamás Nagy, managing director of Medirlab, the company that developed the speed camera, told Vezess.hu: “During the installation of the TraffiPack cabinets, we noticed the lack of speed measurement devices and the heavy workload of the police, hence we decided to develop a speed measurement device that is optimized for the cabinets and has a reduced price.”

There are currently over 280 speed cameras on the country’s roads, mainly equipped with ARH CAM S-1 devices on a temporary basis, but there are fewer of these than boxes. In addition, the S1s are also used by the police in other situations, such as on tripods or in police cars, therefore they cannot continuously supply the fixed boxes. Mobile speed cameras – such as the S1 and TC-108 – also perform other tasks, such as measurements from tripods or police cars, thus they are less likely to be placed in fixed cabinets. This is a problem for local governments, as they expect the installed boxes to have a continuous deterrent effect.

The two main advantages of the TC-Lite are:

  • It can remain in the cabinets permanently and is in constant contact with the VÉDA/KAFIR system, so it can be operated over the long term.
  • Its price is much lower than that of the S-1 (around 8 million forints): 2.75 million forints with an IRLED flash, 2.5 million forints without.

I think we will be able to install the first devices ordered from the beginning of October. Based on demand so far, I think motorists will soon encounter them in many places,”

said Nagy. The new devices may first appear in rural areas and on rural roads.

The new device is not mobile, it is only suitable for fixed installation, it has no display, and it cannot be used from a car or a stand. It is compatible with three types of Trafibox, measures from a distance of approximately 150 meters, and takes photos of speeding vehicles from 50-60 meters.
