New Oil Discovery Near Budapest Could Reshuffle Our Energy Market

MOL’s Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta

Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, in partnership with O&GD, has discovered a new oil field near Galgahévíz (near Budapest), around 2,400 meters below ground. The Galgahévíz-4 well, located within the “Mogyoród” concession area, is capable of producing approximately 1,000 barrels of crude oil per day, which will be processed at MOL’s Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta, the company announced in a statement on Wednesday.

Drilling for the well began at the end of May and reached its target depth in just 37 days. Following successful tests, the well has been brought online. MOL and O&GD will share production on a 49-51 percent basis, respectively. Drilling operations were carried out by MOL subsidiary Rotary Zrt. using the R-69 rig.

György Bacsa, Managing Director of MOL Hungary, emphasized that the new discovery significantly strengthens Hungary’s energy security. “Domestic production reduces reliance on imports. Given the ongoing uncertainties around supply routes, the more pipelines and local sources we have, the more secure our energy future becomes,” he said. “The best source is always the domestic one, which is why MOL prioritizes hydrocarbon exploration in Hungary.”

The statement also highlighted that this is just one of several recent successful discoveries by MOL. These include the Vecsés-2 well in November 2022, Vecsés-1 in May 2024, Vecsés-3 in November 2024, and an oil find near Somogysámson (western Hungary) in March 2025. In addition, MOL has carried out 25 successful drills under its “shallow gas” program launched in 2019.

MOL remains Hungary’s largest hydrocarbon producer, operating nearly 1,300 oil and gas wells. In 2024, the company was responsible for 47% of Hungary’s crude oil production (about 600,000 tons) and nearly 80% of its natural gas output (close to 1.5 billion cubic meters). Hungary is also the most significant contributor to MOL Group’s overall oil and gas portfolio, accounting for 39% of total production. The Galgahévíz-4 well alone is expected to contribute around 4% to MOL’s domestic oil output.
