As the global automotive industry works intensively on more efficient energy storage systems, a Hungarian innovation is attracting significant attention. The ONLi technology presented by Edortech Kft. not only promises to double the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, but could also redefine industrial value creation in Europe.
For over a century, combustion engines have been at the heart of mobility, but the era of fossil fuels is coming to an end. Decarbonization and stricter emission standards have put the industry on an irreversible path toward electrification. In this new era, the battery is no longer just a component—it is the strategic powerhouse of the industry.
Until now, research has focused primarily on optimizing the cathode side, but the Hungarian innovation ONLi takes a different approach, focusing on the anode.
In collaboration with the renowned Bay Zoltán Research Center, Edortech has developed a solution that eliminates the need for conventional graphite-silicon structures, Világgazdaság reports.
Instead of classic active materials, ONLi relies on a specially developed metal alloy produced by electrochemical deposition. According to the manufacturer, the results are groundbreaking:
- Energy density: Doubled compared to current standards.
- Sustainability: Energy requirements in production are reduced by 20 percent, while water consumption is drastically reduced or even completely eliminated.
- Compatibility: The technology is designed to be integrated directly into existing battery factories without the need to replace existing production lines.
“We made a conscious decision to present this invention in Hungary first. The future of a Hungarian innovation should not be decided abroad,” Ádám Vida, CEO of Edortech Kft., told the business news portal.
He emphasized that
ONLi is no longer just a laboratory experiment; the technology is ready for pilot production and thus for industrial use.
The goal is clearly defined. Hungary should not only be a location for foreign battery giants, but should also become a global player in the value chain with its own anode production, Ádám Vida added.
In a market environment currently dominated by large Asian corporations, ONLi offers Europe a chance to regain lost ground.
Edortech’s strategy is structured in stages. First, specialized niche manufacturers are to be convinced of the performance of the new anodes before the leap into mass production by global automotive corporations is made. The success of ONLi could have an impact far beyond the battery cell. Experts see it as a precedent for Hungarian “deep tech” developments.
If the market breakthrough is successful, it could trigger a ripple effect for further innovations in the field of recycling and post-lithium technologies.
The mobility transition is being decided today in the laboratories of battery researchers. With ONLi technology, Hungary is demonstrating that it has the potential to rise from being an extended workbench location to a technological trendsetter in electromobility. Negotiations on initial production capacities in the country are already underway – the future of the “Hungarian battery” has begun.
