Minister Péter Szijjártó said at the opening of the Hungarian Export Development Agency (HEPA) stand at the World Nuclear Exhibition that global demand for electricity is currently growing explosively due to the transition to electric vehicles in the automotive industry, the increasingly widespread use of cooling and heating systems, the growing performance of industry, and the construction of large data centers.
In meeting this demand, he said, the following aspects must be taken into account: supply must cover the necessary quantity, the supply must be stable, secure, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly, and all of this must be guaranteed in the long term.
However, as he said, only nuclear energy can currently meet these conditions.
That is why Hungary is committed to expanding its nuclear capacity, as it will be key to ensuring the country’s long-term energy security and maintaining low electricity prices,”
he continued.
In this regard, he pointed out that, on the one hand, work is underway to extend the life of existing reactors and, on the other hand, two new units with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts are being built.
“The nuclear industry is a key sector of the Hungarian economy, which is of strategic importance for the future performance of the national economy,” he said.
Péter Szijjártó noted that Hungary has been using nuclear energy for half a century and has accumulated a wealth of experience and technological knowledge during this time, so it can be safely said that the Hungarian nuclear industry is internationally competitive.
As an example, he cited the unique Hungarian dry cooling technology, which is also attracting great interest on the international market.
He pointed out that six companies are represented in the Hungarian pavilion, offering thermal engineering solutions as well as automation, robotics, data management, and digitization technologies. He added that several of these companies are working on the Paks expansion.
The minister stated: “We Hungarians are committed to sharing our nuclear knowledge, we want to contribute to the global development of nuclear technology, and we reject the negative discrimination against nuclear energy that unfortunately still exists today, which is clearly contrary to our national interests.”
“The presence of the best Hungarian nuclear companies in Paris clearly demonstrates this commitment. I sincerely hope that in the coming days you will have the opportunity to learn about the technologies and services offered by these Hungarian companies, and that they will be able to successfully showcase Hungarian nuclear technology expertise, which is also extremely important for the international performance of our economy,” he added.
