Nuclear Energy Is the Only Sustainable Answer to Rising Global Demand, Says Foreign Minister

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, emphasized in Osaka that only nuclear energy is capable of meeting the world’s rapidly growing demand for electricity in a cheap, safe, and sustainable manner in the future. He said that this is why Hungary is strengthening its cooperation with Japan in the fields of nuclear energy and space technology.

At the Hungarian-Japanese business seminar, the minister emphasized that Europe is in a serious competitiveness crisis, but it is crucial for Hungary to maintain its economic performance. He cited full employment, the continent’s lowest taxes, and record investment as examples. He stated that Hungary is interested in global cooperation, but that bloc formation is contrary to our national interests.

Speaking on the panel on sustainable energy supply, FM Szijjártó said that energy policy is not an ideological but a physical issue, and therefore it is dangerous to politicize it. He pointed out that growing demand—especially for electric cars, cooling and heating systems, and data centers—can only be met with nuclear energy.

According to the minister, Hungary is a good example of East-West cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, as Russian, French, German, and American players are all participating in the Paks expansion. He said that in the future, Hungary may even consider installing small modular reactors, as electricity demand is growing dramatically due to the production of electric vehicles and batteries.

FM Szijjártó finally warned that if climate policy debates become ideological, it will not help to save the planet. “If we ignore reality, climate policy will only become a campaign issue,” he concluded.
