One Silver and Two Gold Medals for Hungary at U23 European Boxing Championships

Levente Gémes and Zsófia Szira won gold, while Lilla Szeleczki won silver on Saturday at the U23 European Boxing Championships at the BOK Hall in Budapest.

According to the Hungarian Boxing Federation’s social media page, in the men’s 75 kg final, Gémes, who is from Szeged, defeated Italy’s Gabriele Guidi Rontanit “in a great battle, with a fantastic performance, on points.”

The youth world championship silver medalist won the first round 4-1 with an excellent performance, then the Italian launched a major offensive in the middle of the second round and evened the score. The decision was left to the final round, where Gémes fought hard, giving his all, and it paid off, as he celebrated his first European Championship title at the end of a close battle.

In the women’s +80 kg category, Szira boxed excellently against Turkey’s Türkmen Hikmetgül, so much so that the referee ended the final in the second round due to her decisive superiority.

The Hungarian athlete, who was the European youth champion in 2023, tried to use her physical advantage to her benefit, and after an even first round, she scored three times against her opponent in the second round, establishing her dominance.

In the women’s 48 kg weight class, Szeleczki lost a close battle to Turkey’s Nurselen Yalgettek.

The Hungarian boxer started off strong against her opponent and won the first round 3-2. In the second round, she took even more risks and attacked more, but this worked in the Turkish boxer’s favor instead. Szeleczki started the final round with quick punches, but after that, it was the Turkish boxer’s punches that landed.
