Hungary has joined the European Coalition Against Drugs (ECAD), János Bóka, the minister responsible for European Union affairs, announced on Thursday on his Facebook page.
In his post, János Bóka warned that “drug trafficking is one of the most severe systemic threats to the safety, health and stability of our societies in Europe.” He said the phenomenon’s grave consequences require a comprehensive response focused both on reducing demand and dismantling criminal organizations.
Therefore today in Copenhagen Hungary joined the European Coalition Against Drugs (ECAD), established within the framework of the European Political Community meeting,”
János Bóka wrote.
He described the coalition’s aim as delivering a coordinated, decisive and practical response to the continent‑wide drug threat: combating international drug trafficking; strengthening financial control systems and dismantling the criminal ecosystems built around drug trade; and cooperating on prevention and treatment.
Tapping into the language of national responsibility, János Bóka added that action against drug trafficking is not merely a security issue but a task that will shape the lives of future generations. “We will act with every tool at our disposal against criminal organizations and drug trafficking,” he stressed, and pledged Hungary’s active participation in European cooperation to protect society and bolster citizens’ welfare.
László Horváth, the government commissioner responsible for dismantling drug trafficking, also commented on Facebook, calling drug trade a daily threat to Europeans’ safety and one of the continent’s gravest challenges. “Behind every drug there is organized crime, and organized crime knows no borders,” László Horváth wrote. “There is nothing to negotiate with organized crime; we will not bargain with criminals. There is nothing to discuss with those who seek to get rich by poisoning, addicting and preying upon our youth and children, who destroy families and communities.” László Horváth said the new coalition aims to act through international cooperation to curb drug trafficking, restrict the financial operations of criminal networks and coordinate prevention efforts.
We are participating in European cooperation because every ally matters in the fight against drugs,” he wrote, reiterating Hungary’s commitment to firm action and a zero‑tolerance policy as the society’s rightful self‑defense.
The commissioner outlined domestic measures already in place and planned: adoption of one of Europe’s strictest drug laws, intensified police operations, renewed prevention programmes and strengthening the resilience of local communities. “There will be no mercy for drug dealers — we will sweep them out of Hungary!” he added.
