Following Gergő Szemes’ bronze medal on Wednesday, Hungarian fencers celebrated further successes at the World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. Our fencers won two more medals over the weekend, once again underlining their position in world-class fencing.

It was a historic success for the men’s foil team, consisting of Gergő Szemes, Dániel Dósa, Andor Mihályi, and Gergely Tóth. Their bronze is the first team World Championship medal of Hungary in this discipline since 1987. After strong victories against China, who finished second at the previous World Championships, and the reigning Olympic champions from Japan, the Hungarian quartet only lost to the United States, who are second in the world rankings.

In the decisive battle for third place, the French opponent, who won bronze at the Paris Olympics and came second at this year’s European Championships, did not cause any problems overall this time.

They confidently defeated the French, with Gergő Szemes laying the foundation with a 5-0 start, and the team was able to maintain the lead until the end.

In the mixed zone, Dániel Dósa emphasized the strong team spirit and honesty within the team as the key to success. He also highlighted the role of the young fencers, who are pushing the entire team forward with their high level of training.

In the individual épée competition, Gergely Siklósi fought his way to the final. The 2019 world champion and 2021 Olympic silver medalist showed impressive form in Tbilisi, even defeating Olympic champion Nikita Koshman in the semifinals.

In a thrilling final, Gergely Siklósi faced Japanese Olympic champion Koki Kano. The bout was evenly matched until the end and was only decided in overtime by a “golden touch,” with Kano scoring the decisive hit.

Despite the narrow defeat, the Hungarian fencer was satisfied with his silver medal: “A World Championship silver medal in the individual competition is a huge achievement.

I am not sad that I did not win. I think it just makes me even more motivated for the future,”

he explained.

The momentum continued on Monday, as the men’s sabre team (Áron Szilágyi, Csanád Gémesi, Krisztián Rabb, Nikolász Iliász) advanced to the final. After easy victories against Georgia and China, the defending Hungarian team faced stronger opponents, as the Romanians, who had stopped the Russians and the French, were not to be taken lightly. The match went accordingly, with the Hungarian quartet winning 43-40 in a hard-fought contest.

The Hungarians will face Italy in the final, starting at 5:35 p.m. Central European Time.

The team also battled the Italians for gold at the European Championships in Genoa this June, when the Hungarians proved to be ten hits better.
