Over HUF 240 Billion Invested to Strengthen Hungarian Communities Beyond the Borders

We want to continue providing assistance that meets the needs of Hungarian organizations across the border, Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó told the Parliament’s Committee on National Cohesion.

At the meeting of the Parliament’s Committee on National Cohesion, the minister emphasized that national policy remains at the heart of Hungary’s sovereign foreign policy and that the government is committed to enforcing the rights of all Hungarian communities worldwide.

He pointed out that, as part of the economic development program for the Carpathian Basin, the number of successful investments has exceeded 62,000 this year and that state subsidies amounting to HUF 242 billion (EUR 625 million, 1 EUR = 388 HUF), and investments worth more than HUF 470 billion have been made.

Most of this funding went to Transcarpathia (Ukraine), where more than 34,000 investment programs were implemented.

In Vojvodina (Serbia), slightly more than 16,000 have been implemented since the program began in 2016, in Romania more than 6,000, in Slovakia just under 4,000, in the Drava region (Croatia) almost 1,000, and in the Upper Mur region (Slovenia), Péter Szijjártó said.

“In addition, we also support investments by Hungarian companies in the Carpathian Basin. A total of 226 such projects have been carried out under the program. The total amount of investments made in neighboring countries, especially in areas inhabited by Hungarians, has now reached HUF 200 billion,” he added. Péter Szijjártó also addressed the physical conditions for maintaining relations with communities across the border, particularly with regard to border permeability.

“The government’s stance on illegal migration remains unchanged; we do not allow it under any circumstances, but we want to offer as many and as smooth opportunities as possible to people who cross the border properly,” he noted.

The chief diplomat made it clear that HUF 6.5 billion have been allocated this year for the operation of the university system maintained by the Sapientia Foundation. He also pointed out that the number of scholarships for members of the diaspora community has exceeded the 500 mark in 2025.

We have allocated more than HUF 1 billion for the afternoon education program in western Romania.

We have allocated HUF 1.2 billion for the operation of twenty institutions of national importance in Slovakia, while we have provided a total of nearly HUF 4 billion for the maintenance of sixteen institutions and six programs of national importance in Vojvodina,” he emphasized.

Péter Szijjártó then reported that 150 new facilities have been built and 700 renovated this year as part of the program to develop kindergartens in the Carpathian Basin.

He also explained that after tragedies such as the disaster at the Praid (Parajd) salt mine, whose victims have so far been supported with more than HUF 600 million, all possible assistance will be provided.

“We are committed to continuing to provide every support to Hungarians across the border in the future. We are in constant contact with the organizations representing Hungarian communities across the border, and as before, we do not want to reinvent the wheel, but rather provide assistance that meets the needs of Hungarian organizations across the border,” the minister summarized.
