Paks Expansion Accelerated with French and Russian Cooperation

In Hungary, Framatome (France) and Rosatom (Russia) are accelerating the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant to ensure the continued security of our country’s energy supply and to maintain utility cost reductions, said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Thursday in Budapest.

The minister stated after talks with Framatome executives that the French company will supply one of the most important components of the Paks reactor, its control system.

In fact, Framatome is continuing to increase its role in the Paks investment, which is good news because the French use the most modern nuclear technology, and there is a very close alliance between the Hungarian and French governments in the field of nuclear energy,”

he said.

He then stated that the government would not allow nuclear energy to be subjected to all kinds of crazy ideological attacks and discrimination.

FM Péter Szijjártó believed that if the Tisza Party (main opposition party in Hungary) won the April election, it would obviously not say no to Brussels and would allow the nuclear industry to be sanctioned, which would spell the end of the Paks project.

“The European Council is currently discussing the twentieth package of sanctions, and of course the Baltic states and some northern countries are now pushing for Rosatom, the nuclear industry, to be subject to sanctions. If this were to happen, construction at Paks would have to be halted, and everything we have invested in it so far would go down the drain,” he warned.

He also pointed out that an even more dramatic consequence would be that if the Paks nuclear power plant could not be built, the long-term guarantee of utility cost reductions would also be undermined.

The long-term guarantee of utility cost reductions is the Paks nuclear power plant itself, as we will produce the electricity ourselves and will not have to buy it from international markets at exorbitant prices. But without Paks, without the new Paks units, there will be no long-term utility cost reductions,”

he emphasized.

The minister concluded by saying that if the Tisza Party wins the election, it would say yes to the Brussels sanctions, and that would be the end of utility cost reductions in the long term.

That is why we must win, because if we win, we will continue the Paks investment with significant French participation, and then utility cost reductions will be fine in Hungary in the long term,”

he emphasized.

“So we will continue to work together with the French and the Russians. We will speed up construction to ensure that Hungary’s energy supply is secure and that Hungarian families continue to have the lowest utility costs in Europe,” he added.
