Paks II Project Moves Forward Despite Court Decision

The recent ruling by the European Court of Justice does not restrict or slow down the Paks II investment in any way, the body ruled against the European Commission, said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Thursday in Budapest.

The minister emphasized at a joint press conference with his Austrian counterpart, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, regarding the European Court of Justice’s ruling on state aid for the Paks expansion: “Before Hungary and the opponents of Hungarian energy security pop the champagne, I would like to make it clear that the European Court of Justice ruled against the European Commission, it annulled a previous decision by the European Commission.”

He then pointed out that the government continues to regard the construction of the Paks nuclear power plant as the main pillar of Hungary’s energy security in the future.

This court decision does not in any way restrict or slow down the progress of the investment; on the contrary, we have accelerated this investment in the recent period,”

he emphasized.

“And at the beginning of the next decade, we will connect both units of the new Paks nuclear power plant to the grid, taking a huge step forward in guaranteeing Hungary’s energy security,” added Péter Szijjártó. The minister also said that the government is committed to ensuring that the Paks nuclear power plant project is completed on schedule. “We are committed to completing the Paks nuclear power plant project on schedule,” he said.
