Parasports Day Opens with Focus on Visual Impairment

Attila Fülöp, State Secretary for Welfare Policy opened the II Hungaricum Para-Sports Day held at the Lakitelek Public College. He said that sport is a good teacher, because it is about struggle and fight, and it also shows the importance of community in a person’s life.
He recalled that Hungarian athletes won 15 medals at last summer’s Paralympics, which shows that Hungarian para-sport is in good shape. According to Attila Fülöp, the Paralympics are now naturally linked to the Olympics, which is also due to the fact that “there are successful para-athletes in Hungary who can fight with spirit”.

Zsolt Orsós, member of the Parasport Subcommittee of the Hungarian Handball Association, head of the rattle ball section, recalled that the Hungarian Parasport Day unanimously approved by Parliament, has been celebrated in Hungary since February 22 2018. He also told the audience that he lost his sight when he was five years old, but with the support of his family and through sport, he thrive. His diligence and perseverance led him to participate in two Paralympics.
This year, the Hungaricum Para-Sports Day in Lakitelek will focus on sports opportunities for the visually impaired.
The event will conclude with a rattle-ball volleyball tournament. The youngsters will be joined by competitors from the National Association of the National Federation of the Hungarian Blind and Partially Sighted. During the day, József Nagy, president of Joe Force SE, physical education teacher, Gábor Toponári, executive president of FODISZ (National Association of Sports for Students with Disabilities), and Sándor Nagy, sports psychologist, will give presentations alongside Zsolt Orsós.
At the II. Hungarikum Para Sports Day, around 200 students from schools in eight municipalities – Izsák, Kecskemét, Kiskunfélegyháza, Lakitelek, Nyárlőrinc, Petőfiszállás, Szentkirály and Tiszaalpár – will be present.
