Pessimism Clouds TISZA Party as Election Campaign Kicks Off

TISZA Party leader Péter Magyar

Opposition leader Péter Magyar announced that the executive committee and candidates of the TISZA party had unanimously decided to nominate him as the prime ministerial candidate and the party’s lead candidate for the parliamentary elections. Meanwhile, information was published indicating that the party leader was preparing his candidates for the possibility that the party could lose in most constituencies despite “promising poll results.”

An article on Index quotes several independent sources who had attended a meeting with Péter Magyar and individual candidates of the party stating that the chairman had given a speech, the tone of which differed significantly from the party’s usual official statements.

According to the party leader himself, TISZA’s victory is by no means certain as things stand at present.

Magyar is said to have assessed the situation for his party as much worse than many believe based on nationwide polls conducted by opinion research institutes.

Based on the article, he therefore asked those present to vote on whether he should be the TISZA party’s lead candidate. The result was published the same day.

The announcement comes after István Kapitány’s chances of becoming prime minister had risen from one percent to five percent on Polymarket on February 10. Some believed that there was a possibility that the party’s economic and energy expert could run as the TISZA party’s candidate for prime minister. However, Kapitány clarified in an interview that he considers it unlikely that he will become prime minister after the election.

Viktor Orbán’s candidacy for the office of prime minister was already confirmed on January 10 at the 31st congress of the Hungarian ruling party.
