Picturesque Tisza River is Covered with Ice in Northern Hungary

The upper section of the Tisza River is covered with a continuous layer of ice in some places.

Due to the prolonged cold weather, continuous ice is covering the surface of the Tisza River in some sections, which is a rare winter phenomenon in Hungary. According to meteorologists, the increasingly cold air that has been flowing in since the beginning of the week has caused large ice floes to appear on the major rivers, including the Tisza, and in some places, the ice has completely frozen over, writes Időkép.

On January 9, a uniform, continuous layer of ice was observed on the surface of the river, particularly in the upper reaches of the Tisza, including Tokaj and Tiszalök.

The water temperature measured on the Tisza is currently between 0 and 1 °C, and forecasts indicate that sub-freezing weather will continue in the coming days, with freezing cold at night and temperatures not rising during the day. This may further strengthen ice formation.

It is not only the Tisza that has frozen over: ice is also forming on the Danube, while the ice cover on Lake Balaton and Lake Velence is also becoming thicker.

However, experts are urging everyone to be cautious: no matter how picturesque the frozen landscape may be, the ice cover is not yet thick enough in all places to be safe to walk on.
