PM Orbán: EU Has Lost Its Global Relevance Amid War and Economic Drift

In a wide-ranging speech opening Hungary’s autumn parliamentary session, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán launched a scathing critique of the European Union’s economic strategy, calling Brussels “paralyzed and indecisive.” He warned that unless the bloc undergoes a swift policy overhaul, it risks marginalization on the global stage.

“Without a strategic turnaround, the EU has no future,” PM Orbán declared. “If Brussels does not act urgently, the Union will enter a phase of slow disintegration.” Citing the growing economic dominance of the United States and Asia, PM Orbán accused the EU of falling behind due to structural weaknesses and misguided priorities.

PM Orbán said Hungary has already begun implementing a new economic policy as of July 1, focused on boosting competitiveness and shielding households. Key measures include:

• Expanded family tax benefits

• Price and interest rate caps

• A 3% fixed-rate housing loan program

• A planned pension increase

He announced that from January 2026, family tax credits will rise by 50%, and income tax exemptions will be extended to millions of mothers. These steps, PM Orbán claimed, form part of a “family-friendly tax revolution” that will leave HUF 4 trillion (cc. EUR 10, 280 million) in households over four years.

PM Orbán reiterated Hungary’s opposition to Ukraine’s EU membership, warning it would “devastate” Hungary’s economy by diverting EU funds and increasing Hungary’s financial burden.

If Ukraine joins the EU, we will be neck-deep in war,” he said, calling instead for EU–Russia diplomatic talks.

On migration, the Prime Minister renewed his rejection of the EU’s migration pact, claiming Hungary has reduced illegal immigration to zero and accusing Brussels of punitive measures.

We are being fined EUR 1 million a day, but we will not back down,” he said, linking migration in Western Europe to rising crime and social instability.

PM Orbán portrayed Brussels as a declining center of power, citing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s call for a “war economy” as evidence of policy failure.

The EU is acting like a broken GPS — constantly recalculating, but never arriving,”

he said.

He also warned that EU leaders want Hungary to abandon its flat tax system, utility subsidies, and interest caps — proposals he said Hungary firmly rejects. A new national consultation will be launched to gauge public opinion on these issues.

PM Orbán ended his speech with a rallying call:

Let us dare to make Hungary great!”

The Prime Minister’s address sets the tone for a busy parliamentary season, with pressing debates ahead on security, energy sovereignty, and economic resilience amid shifting global dynamics.
