Early Saturday morning, a shooting took place in downtown Gävle, Sweden, where six people, including minors, were injured in an armed attack. Police quickly apprehended a 13-year-old boy suspected of the attack. The incident caused outrage in Sweden, with political leaders reacting to the events, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
The shooting was reported at 1:48 a.m. local time on Saturday morning on Kungsgatan Street in the Swedish city. Police apprehended the suspect shortly thereafter, interrogated him, and then handed him over to social services.
Based on the information that was provided, the victims were hit in the lower body, but none are in life-threatening condition. The police emphasized that there is currently no indication that the attack was a terrorist attack, but they did not want to disclose further details about the background of the case or whether the shooting could be linked to gangs.
The scene of the shooting was cordoned off at 9 a.m. local time on Saturday morning, and the police cordon was lifted after the investigation. All those involved—both the perpetrator and the victims—are residents of Gävle and surrounding communities. Some reports suggest that the suspect may have ties to criminal gangs, but the police have not commented on this.
The shooting caused serious outrage in Sweden. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called it “particularly dark and shocking” that a child is suspected of the attack, while Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on his social media page that he “deeply sympathizes with all those affected.” Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson said, “The whole of Sweden has been shaken by the shooting in Gävle.”
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán commented on the attack on his social media page on Saturday.
My deepest condolences to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and the people of Sweden, following the heinous shooting in Gävle. We pray for the victims, their families, their parents, and all Swedes seeking safety in their own communities,”
wrote the Hungarian prime minister.
Fact
Recently Viktor Orbán stated that Sweden is collapsing due to criminal gangs, which are now recruiting teenagers to commit murders. He believes that this problem has been caused by the abandonment of traditional values, a disregard for common sense, and weak governance. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson rejected the accusations, calling PM Orbán’s words “outrageous lies” and accusing the Hungarian leader of undermining the rule of law in his own country.
