In a recent interview on Kossuth Radio, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán discussed his visit to Ohrid, North Macedonia, where he focused on Hungary’s role in resolving regional disputes and enhancing economic ties.
His remarks highlighted Hungary’s current position as the rotating presidency of the EU and the importance of addressing ongoing issues, such as migration and economic cooperation.
EU Presidency and challenges in diplomacy The Prime Minister emphasized the duty of Hungary, as the EU’s rotating president, to mediate conflicts between member states, specifically referring to Northern Macedonia’s disputes with Bulgaria that are hindering its EU membership process. He noted,
this rotating presidency will pass quickly, but there are some issues that do not go away easily,” pointing to migration as a persistent challenge that requires ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Economic Cooperation and Economic Blocs Mr. Orbán highlighted the strategic importance of Northern Macedonia in trade, stating that key routes through the country are vital for Hungary’s economic access to Greek ports. He asserted that the changing global economy demands adaptability:
the world is being torn apart into blocs, and Hungary must defend against this.”
Viktor Orbán advocated for maintaining strong relationships with both Western and Eastern economies, emphasizing a policy of neutrality to safeguard Hungary’s interests.
Impact of the Sanctions PM Orbán criticized the current sanctions policies affecting European businesses, arguing that they slow down economic growth and hinder nation states. He cautioned that,
when bans and sanctions are imposed, we all lose,” expressing concern over the rising trend of bloc-building and its negative repercussions on international relations and economic performance.
In conclusion, the Prime Minister’s interview underscored Hungary’s diplomatic initiatives and the need for a balanced economic approach in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. By fostering dialogue and cooperation, he believes Hungary can secure its interests and avoid the pitfalls of international fragmentation while enhancing its competitiveness in a challenging global economy.
