PM Viktor Orbán Vows to Protect Pensions

We will not only protect pensions, we will continuously increase them, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday evening.

In a video, Zoltán Tarr, Member of the European Parliament for the Tisza Party (main opposition party), states that “the same system that has been in place until now should not necessarily be maintained, and this also applies to the pension system.”

In the same video, pension expert and economist András Simonovits says that “the pension system is currently too generous” and that initial pensions “should be reduced relatively.”

“The highest pensions could be taxed at an additional 10-20 percent. We could consider medium- and long-term reforms, but there is no need to go into detail before the election; let us win the election first,” he added.

Economist Mária Zita Petschnig also remarked that “it cannot be said that the 13th-month pension is directly related to work.”

PM Orbán responded in his post, emphasizing: “The left took away the 13th-month pension—we gave it back. Now, if they come to power, they are preparing to brutally cut pensions—we will not allow it! As long as I am here, the elderly can feel safe!”

Fact

The current government reintroduced the 13th-month pension in 2021, after it was abolished in 2009 by Gordon Bajnai’s left-wing government. The government views the extra monthly pension as a tangible way to express its gratitude to the elderly.
