Politicians React to the Arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro

Protest against the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, 2014. The sign says: “The strength of communism is the deceit.”

From the hundreds of Hungarians who fled Venezuela years ago, we know how oppressive and dictatorial the regime there was, stated the Prime Minister’s political director. Balázs Orbán expressed his hope that they too would one day be able to return to their home.

“We have entered an era of wars and conflicts marked by the primacy of national interests. This is reflected in the current situation in Venezuela, where President Donald Trump is pursuing the American national interests he committed to represent,” the Prime Minister’s political director wrote in a post on X on Sunday.

Balázs Orbán responded as follows to the American president’s announcement on Saturday morning that the United States had carried out a large-scale military operation in Venezuela, during which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been arrested and subsequently flown to the U.S.

Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world. Any conflict that affects global oil production inevitably has an impact on fuel prices,”

noted the politician, who also serves as chair of the board of trustees of Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC).

He recalled that Hungary had increased its resilience to energy crises in recent years, but that no one could escape the effects of global processes. Therefore, despite all the measures taken so far, it was “in Hungary’s national interest” that the conflict did not continue, that the situation in Venezuela consolidated as quickly as possible, and that energy prices in Hungary did not rise.

From the hundreds of Hungarians who fled Venezuela years ago, we know how oppressive and dictatorial system that was in place there. We hope that they too will be able to return home one day,”

Balázs Orbán emphasized. He pointed out: “Brussels and its allies in Hungary once again fail to understand the nature of this situation. As has often been the case, they were not consulted on these matters, nor were they involved in the decisions.”

He noted that only those countries that are members of well-functioning alliance systems will be able to successfully overcome the challenges ahead. “The Hungarian government remains in contact with all relevant parties. The Hungarian people can be assured that we will preserve Hungary’s peace and security, and that even in the most uncertain times, we will continue to act to prevent an increase in energy prices,” Balázs Orbán concluded.

With its intervention in Venezuela, the U.S. has shown the world that President Donald Trump is serious about the Monroe Doctrine, that America belongs to Americans, said the head of the Sovereignty Protection Office on Kossuth Radio’s “Vasárnapi újság” (Sunday Newspaper) program, as reported by hirado.hu.

József Horváth pointed out that, given the reactions of European countries, the Americans had not informed the European powers and the leaders of the European Union about the intervention in Venezuela. The cautious statements by European heads of state and government, according to which Venezuelan President Maduro is a dictator but the United Nations Charter must be respected and peaceful solutions sought, showed that there was a sense of helplessness among European leaders, he added.

The gap between Europe and the new U.S. leadership since President Trump’s inauguration has widened further,”

the expert emphasized. It seems as if Western Europe is opposing the Americans and ignoring the military, security, and economic realities of the last 15 to 20 years, he explained.

The security expert made it clear that in a changing world, the role of large international organizations such as the United Nations has been reevaluated or devalued. The United States has already withdrawn from several UN organizations or stopped funding them. In his opinion, the UN can no longer play the role it successfully fulfilled during the Cold War in this uncertain, changing world.

The statement made by Kaja Kallas on Venezuela exposes the deep crisis in the EU’s common foreign policy, according to János Bóka, Hungary’s minister responsible for EU affairs. In his view, apart from vague wishful thinking, the EU has no real message or strategy for the region and is unable to define its interests in the new era of great power politics.

He emphasized that, due to a lack of instruments and influence, the EU has so far failed to play a significant role, and no change is in sight.

Kaja Kallas’ statement is a sign of weakness and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the changes in international relations,

the politician stressed.

If the EU wants to be a real global player, it should start by refraining from making such statements in the future, the minister made clear. He emphasized that the Hungarian government is fulfilling its duty: it is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of Hungarian citizens in Venezuela, to secure Hungary’s energy supply, and to closely monitor developments on the ground.

Viktor Orbán: “What goes around in the EU, comes around”

The U.S. administration sees “the civilizational-scale decline that we in Hungary have been fighting against for fifteen years,” wrote the prime minister.Continue reading
