President Announces Date for 2026 Parliamentary Elections

The President has set April 12, as the date for the parliamentary elections, the Sándor Palace announced on Tuesday.

The announcement stated that in accordance with his constitutional powers, President Tamás Sulyok had set the date for the 2026 general election of members of parliament in a decision signed on Tuesday.

The president noted that free elections are the cornerstone of representative democracy, and parliamentary elections are a prominent expression of popular sovereignty, during which all Hungarian citizens with voting rights can determine the fate of Hungary through their free and responsible decisions.

In line with established public law tradition, the parliamentary elections will be held on April 12, the earliest date permitted under the Constitution and the Act on Electoral Procedure,

the president said.

The head of state encourages Hungarian citizens to exercise their legal right to vote.

Fact

The election will determine the makeup of Hungary’s 199-seat National Assembly for the next four-year term and shape the formation of the next government.

Under Hungary’s constitution, parliamentary elections are held in April or May of the fourth year following the election of the previous National Assembly. The exact date is set by the president at least 72 days before the vote. The election day must fall on a Sunday and cannot coincide with a public holiday. As the first Sunday of April 2026 falls on Easter, April 12 is the earliest possible date.

In the coming months, parties are expected to begin intensifying their campaigns, with candidate nominations and official campaign activities scheduled in accordance with electoral law. By law, the official campaign period begins 50 days ahead of the election, which this year is February 21.

A recent Nézőpont Institute survey shows little change in party preferences over the Christmas break, with the governing party strengthening its lead. If an election were held this Sunday, Fidesz-KDNP would take 47% of the list votes, the Tisza Party 40%, and the Our Homeland Movement (Mi Hazánk) would secure 6%. As also confirmed by an earlier survey, a three-party parliament is likely to take shape.
