I have signed an agreement with the U.S. president on a financial shield, which gives us virtually unlimited financing options in America, enabling us to replace any money from Brussels, the prime minister said.
After his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, Viktor Orbán answered journalists’ questions about the agreement on his flight back to Budapest on Saturday, emphasizing that if Hungary or the country’s financial system were to come under any external attack, “the Americans have given their word that they will protect Hungary’s financial stability in all such cases.”
The prime minister said it was very important that if Hungary were to be attacked for speculative or political reasons, we could count on an American financial shield.
He added, “That is how I see the future. Good morning, Brussels!”
“We can therefore safely say that if a financial attack were to be launched against Hungary from any corner of the world (let us leave Brussels aside for now) – whether it affected our exchange rate, our debt rating or our credit rating – we would have American help at our disposal to ward it off,” said the head of government.
Viktor Orbán emphasized that we can also say that we have almost unlimited financing options in America, with which we can replace any money from Brussels.
The prime minister emphasized that Hungary does not have to give up its major economic plans of national strategic importance because it will take another two or three years to obtain every forint from Brussels.
He added that there is no need to postpone or reschedule these plans, “we can achieve everything.”
In Viktor Orbán’s view, this will be reflected in the forint (HUF) exchange rate and later in borrowing, but Hungary’s position in the international financial market is already much stronger than it was the day after the negotiations. The American financial shield strengthens us and creates a more favorable international financial situation for us,”
the prime minister said in response to questions from journalists.
