Recycling at Festivals Has Never Been Simpler

MOHU (MOL Waste Management Private Company Limited by Shares) unveiled its locally developed festival return machine at a running event in Budapest. This portable, mobile waste collection device is specifically designed for use at huge outdoor events, reported Turizmus.

Several Hungarian festivals have already expressed interest in the service. This solution complements the return system already in place for hotels, restaurants, and cafés, and it can also be applied at events.

The goal is to return as many bottles as possible at such gatherings, enabling the recycling of their materials.

They noted that MOHU has pre-financed the nationwide implementation of the system with around 40 billion forints (97 million euros). Thanks to this, since July 2024, 1.5 billion bottles have already been returned in Hungary, and this number continues to grow with the return of 5–7 million bottles, glass containers, and cans daily.

Fact

The new festival recycling system was already tested in Saturday’s running competition, Telekom Vivicittá.

The company can now provide a return system not only in stores but also at festivals and event venues. The collected bottles from the MOHU mobile return machines at event catering locations will be transported away afterward.

The new machines were developed by the Hungarian company Returmatic and are capable of holding approximately: 2,000–3,000 PET bottles and aluminum cans, as well as 1,500 glass containers. The containers are easily replaceable, allowing the return process to run smoothly.

At the festival machines, users can typically choose between two options: transferring the refund amount to their own bank account, or donating it to charity. However, based on the event organizer’s decision, a third option is also available:

the well-known paper voucher can be used at vendors and shops at the event, just like in regular stores.

There is already high interest in the new service: the registration system is now live on the MOHU Partner Portal, and applications for the first event locations are already underway.
