Romanian Anti-Corruption Body Targets Hungarian Mayors

The Romanian Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) continues to keep Hungarian municipal leaders in a state of uncertainty with a series of indictments, writes Maszol. The portal believes the authority’s actions are often driven by political rather than legal motives, and the proceedings against Hungarian mayors often end years later with acquittals and no one held accountable.

A month after the DNA dropped the charges against Zoltán Soós, mayor of Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely), presumably temporarily, Endre Márk, RMDSZ city leader in Reghin (Szászrégen), has now been targeted. According to the charges, four years ago, the office signed a legal contract worth 6,000 lei (around 1,217 euros) without the approval of the city council. However, Endre Márk emphasized that he did not make any legal mistakes, as a decision by the council is not required for such amounts. He believes that he may be seen as a “new trophy” for the DNA.

Maszol recalls that several Hungarian mayors of towns in Szeklerland have reported similar harassment. The spectacular indictments were followed by acquittals in court, while those involved were politically and personally dragged through the mud.

The portal recalls that the DNA initially enjoyed broad public support, but over time it became a political tool. During the period led by Laura Codruța Kövesi, mass wiretapping was launched with the involvement of the secret services, and it was often observed that the prosecutor’s office was working “on demand.” Despite all this, Brussels still considers the DNA to be one of the model institutions in the fight against corruption.

According to Maszol, all this has led to DNA proceedings being considered almost an “occupational hazard” for Hungarian mayors: they have to endure and tolerate them without facing consequences.
