Romanian Firm to Build Expressway Linking Satu-Mare with Hungarian Border

“One of Romania’s largest construction companies, Erbasu Constructii, will build the expressway between Satu Mare (Szatmárnémeti) and Oar (Óvári) near the Romanian-Hungarian border. The construction contract was signed on Tuesday,” announced Cristian Pistol, CEO of the Romanian National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR).

The CNAIR director announced on Facebook that the contractor has 24 months to build the 10.83-kilometer expressway. The contract is worth 720.48 million lei (approximately 141.86 million euros) excluding VAT.

The expressway starts at the Satu Mare ring road and reaches the Romanian-Hungarian border at Oar. On the Hungarian side, it connects to the M49 motorway, which branches off from the M3 motorway, thus connecting Satu Mare to the European motorway network.

In 2021, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, signed an agreement with Claudiu Nasui, then Romanian Minister of Economy, Business and Tourism, on the construction of the Mátészalka-Szatmárnémeti expressway.

The Satu Mare-Ovar road to be built by the Romanian side will be nearly 11 kilometers long, with two lanes in each direction, and will include two junctions and two parking lots. Currently, the city in Partium (historical region that includes parts of northwestern Romania, with Satu Mare being the main city in that area) is connected to the Romanian-Hungarian border by the DN19A Romanian national road, which has two lanes in each direction.
