Rosatom Cleared to Supply Nuclear Equipment for Hungary’s Paks II Power Plant

Rosatom’s machine manufacturing division (Rosatom Mechanical Engineering LLC.) has met all the audit requirements of Paks II Zrt., and has therefore been approved to supply nuclear-based steam generating equipment for the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant project, the Russian company reported on Thursday.

Experts from Paks II Zrt. and inspectors from the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (OAH) conducted an audit at Rosatom Mechanical Engineering LLC, which manages the Russian state-owned Rosatom’s machine manufacturing division and coordinates the delivery of most of the nuclear equipment for units 5 and 6 of the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant.

They emphasized that the document issued by Paks II Zrt. states that Rosatom Mechanical Engineering LLC fully complies with the requirements, and based on the valid certificate, the company can supply nuclear-based steam generating equipment for the two new units. During the audit, Paks II experts found no non-conformities.

Rosatom’s machine-building division companies are currently manufacturing VVER-1200 reactors. The production of metallurgical blanks for the reactor vessel of Unit 5 began in 2024, and for Unit 6 in 2025. The production of the internal equipment for the reactor of Unit 5 also started in 2025. Before the start of work, the manufacturing plants involved in the production of equipment for the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant received the relevant nuclear certification and licenses, they added.

The first audit was held in 2018, at the company managing Rosatom’s machine-building division.

The announcement recalled that the Paks expansion is the first modern Russian-designed nuclear power plant project to be built with VVER-1200 reactors in the European Union. The project began with a Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental agreement on January 14, 2014, and the construction license was issued by the Hungarian nuclear authorities in August 2022, confirming that the investment complies with Hungarian and European nuclear safety regulations.
