Running Season Kicks off with Supermarathon at Lake Balaton

The 196-kilometer Balaton Supermarathon, a 14-year-old running event organized by the Budapest Sports Office, starts today. The event, taking place until Sunday, will see a 2,000-strong convoy of runners, chaperones and organizers circle the lake, with entries from 20 countries.
This year, 250 runners have signed up to complete the distance in one go, including eight who finished the first Balaton Supermarathon and are now preparing for their 15th.
The peloton will run between
Siófok and Fonyód (48.45 km) on Thursday,
Fonyód and Szigliget (53.2 km) on Friday,
Badacsony and Balatonfüred (43.6 km) on Saturday,
Balatonfüred and Siófok (51.2 km) on Sunday.
“The Balaton Supermarathon is a spring celebration of movement, a legendary race that gives everyone the chance to run in a fantastic atmosphere in a beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Balaton.
Anyone who loves running and exercise should definitely try it once, but the thousands of returning participants prove that the Balaton Supermarathon is addictive, and those who take part once always want to come back afterwards,”
said Árpád Kocsis, Managing Director of Budapest Sports Office.
In addition to the individual distances, the four-day running ‘festival’ also offers the possibility to run in pairs or teams of 3-4 people, so that you can run around Lake Balaton in daily sections of 15-20 kilometers. For those who join the event for just one day, they can also run the day’s distance separately in the Marathon+ category.
For weekend runners, the organizers are offering the Half Balaton Supermarathon, that starts in Badacsony on Saturday and finishes in Siófok on Sunday. This 96-kilometer stage can also be completed individually, in pairs or as a team.
There will also be special features at various locations: on Friday, the Gulf Half Marathon will start from Keszthely and finish together with the multi-day runners under the castle of Szigliget. On Saturday, the classic MarathonFüred will take place, starting from Badacsonytomaj and finishing in Balatonfüred, while on Sunday, the event will close with the 15-kilometer Balaton Supermarathon ‘Front-Runner’, that will take the runners to the finish line together with the entire field in Siófok.
