The Italian League party led by Matteo Salvini has announced its intention to take the matter back to the European Parliament, calling the withdrawal of funds from Hungary a shameful attack on justice, freedom, solidarity and democracy. In a statement, the Italian ruling party also called it “a disgraceful attack.”
“Withdrawing funds is a mere excuse against Budapest (…)
We are convinced that this is just another tool against a democratically elected (Hungarian) government with a broad majority, which is not liked by the European elites. The League is on Orbán’s side,”
said Paolo Borchia, the League’s leader in the European Parliament. A European Commission spokesman had earlier said Hungary would lose €1.04 billion in EU funds under the rule of law mechanism.
In a separate statement, Borchia stressed that they support the Patriots of Europe group bringing Hungary’s case back to the European Parliament. The League was one of the first to join the Patriots for Europe last summer. The political group in the European Parliament was founded by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (Fidesz), former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO 2011), and former Austrian Minister of the Interior Herbert Kickl and MEP Harald Vilimsky (both Freedom Party of Austria).

As Hungary Today reported, EU Affairs Minister János Bóka also spoke out on the matter recently, stressing on his Facebook page that the government had met all the conditions for access to EU funds.
Brussels wants to take away the resources that Hungary and the Hungarian people deserve for political reasons.
But as long as Hungary has a national and sovereign government, it will not lose a single euro cent. The Hungarian government has already won more than €12 billion in EU funds through a tough fight. Hungary is among the top Member States in the use of this money. Hungary will use all legal and political means to obtain the remaining funds,” said János Bóka.
