Over 2,000 years of history come alive as Szombathely (western Hungary) hosts the XXIV Savaria Historical Carnival, featuring Roman legions, medieval merchants, baroque nobles, and more, writes turizmus.com.
This year’s parade, held between August 21-24, will feature 46 reenactment groups from Hungary and abroad—Germany, Austria, Czechia, and Romania—showcasing historical eras from ancient Rome to the 20th century.
According to Deputy Mayor Soma Horváth, the event invites visitors on a vivid time-travel experience through the city’s streets.
At the core of the procession are Roman reenactors such as Legio XV Apollinaris and Legio Leonum Valentiniani, joined by gladiators, Sarmatian auxiliaries, senators, and priestesses of Isis. Later eras include migrating tribes, Renaissance performers, and even WWII reenactors.
The Szombathely Market Hall also plays a symbolic role. Named after the city’s historic Saturday markets, it will transform into a medieval marketplace where artisans, storytellers, and historical characters recreate the bustle of past centuries.

From baroque-era townsfolk to hussars and vintage cyclists, the parade spans centuries. Contemporary elements include local sports champions and the dynamic ATARU TAIKO drum ensemble, adding rhythm to the spectacle.
The carnival is not just a show—it is a living history lesson,”
said Horváth.
Participants wear authentic costumes and wield period-correct gear, bringing the past to life in immersive detail. Beyond the parade, local institutions also bring rich events to the table. Highlights include performances by the Weöres Sándor Theater, concerts by the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, and storytelling in the Gayer Park’s Bibliotheka Savaria. The FALCO Basketball Club will engage fans at the popular “Champions’ Square.”
Street music returns with two live music venues hosting ten gigs over the weekend, from solo artists to full bands, along Borok Utcája (Street of Wines) and Thököly Street.
Museums across the city, led by the Savaria Museum, offer guided tours and special events as part of the wider “Experience Szombathely!” series, which will run through the end of September with over 110 programs across 39 venues.
