Self-driving Armored Vehicle Developed at Hungarian University

The Széchenyi István University has developed autonomous and remote control functions for a lightweight armor-plated off-road base vehicle, their website announced. The vehicle, developed in cooperation with Gamma Zrt., a leading manufacturer of the Hungarian defense industry, is unique in the country for military and disaster management purposes.
The need for this innovation arose during the testing and demonstration of the capabilities of existing vehicles with ballistic protection to protect the living force and reduce the need for human resources. The main objective of the innovation call was to build a basic vehicle capable of operating in difficult terrain conditions, providing protection against physical impacts, ensuring the basic conditions for system integration for self-control and multi-purpose application.
A replacement superstructure system for the single cab, semi-platform 4×4 vehicle has also been developed to support multifunctional tasking, allowing the development of bodies with specific professional capabilities to meet different user needs.
The initial focus was on developing a vehicle capable of performing border protection and reconnaissance functions, but since then there has been interest in innovation from a number of other areas, such as fire services.
Dr. Attila Zsitnyányi, CEO of Gamma Zrt, said that the successful tender with the Széchenyi István University has inspired further developments, and that the remote control and self-driving functions could be extended to other vehicles.
“Being Hungary’s only developer and manufacturer of light armored base vehicles is a major responsibility, so we are open to future-oriented research collaborations such as the one with the university in Győr. I have admired the attitude and work ethic of the research center and the university management working on this project from the very beginning of the application process. They did an excellent job all the way through, with incredibly short response times. It was a pleasure to work with them,” said the CEO. He added that they would continue their partnership with the institute in the future thanks to the excellent experience.
