Several Waves of Snowfall Expected in the First Week of January

Several waves of snowfall are expected in the first week of January, and the air will continue to cool: temperatures may drop below freezing in many places during the day this week, and on Friday morning, it may reach as low as minus 19 degrees Celsius in areas covered with thick snow. In addition to snowfall, sleet and rain are also possible, and the wind may cause snowdrifts, confirms the forecast by HungaroMet Nonprofit Zrt (meteorological service).

On Monday morning, cloud cover will thicken in the north, the sky will be overcast across the country, and snowfall is expected in more and more areas from the south. A measurable layer of snow will form across most of the country, with thick snow cover developing mainly in the southern part of the country. Mixed precipitation and freezing rain are also likely near the southeastern and eastern borders. The north and northeast winds will pick up in places.

On Tuesday, the sky will be mostly overcast, with temporary breaks and thinning clouds in the northwest and north. Precipitation is likely in two waves: snow may fall in the east until morning, and freezing rain may occur in the eastern border region until dawn, then after a temporary break, another precipitation zone will arrive from the southwest, and from the afternoon onwards, snow may fall in more and more places.

A thicker snow cover may form in the southeastern part of the country, while the chance of precipitation is lowest in the northwest.

The northwesterly and northerly winds will be brisk in the northern Transdanubia and the northeast, accompanied by strong gusts in places, which may result in snow drifts in the Bakony Mountains.
