At Wednesday’s meeting, the Defense Council decided to take the strongest possible action against extremist Islamist groups amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. Meanwhile, soldiers have been deployed to 75 locations to protect energy facilities due to possible Ukrainian sabotage, and the Council has established a fact-finding committee to investigate the Druzhba oil pipeline, the Prime Minister announced on social media.
In his video post, Viktor Orbán said that the meeting reviewed the measures necessary due to the Ukrainian oil blockade and the war in the Middle East. In such a situation, Hungary’s peace and security are paramount, which is why the Defense Council is meeting regularly, he added.
The Prime Minister explained that the conflict in the Middle East has increased the threat of terrorism in Europe, which is why Hungary has strengthened the protection of its people and increased the presence of police and soldiers in public areas.
I have instructed law enforcement agencies to take the strictest possible action against individuals who may be linked to extremist Islamist groups,”
he emphasized.
He also said that special attention must be paid to critical energy facilities because, as he put it, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that he will “prevent Russian energy from reaching Europe.”
“Therefore, any energy facility that uses Russian energy could be a target for Ukrainian sabotage,” Viktor Orbán warned, noting that “the Nord Stream pipeline was also blown up by the Ukrainians.”
“We have therefore decided that we must strengthen the protection of Hungarian energy facilities. According to the report I received today, the army has already been deployed to 75 locations,” he revealed.
In addition, it was decided to set up a fact-finding committee led by Gábor Czepek, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, whose task will be to assess the actual condition of the Druzhba oil pipeline on site,
the Prime Minister announced.
“We demand that President Zelenskyy allow our inspectors into Ukraine and enable the pipeline to be inspected,” said PM Orbán. “Hungary will not give in, we will resist Ukrainian blackmail, we will break the oil blockade and we will block all EU decisions important to Ukraine until the situation is resolved,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
