Sovereignty Protection Office Warns of Campaign to Question Hungarian Election Results

Foreign-funded pressure groups are preparing to question the results of the Hungarian elections, the Sovereignty Protection Office told MTI on Thursday.

The Office wrote that patterns and information uncovered by them show that international political pressure centers are coordinating preparations for a disinformation campaign aimed at questioning the legitimacy of the Hungarian elections.

They have begun to construct a narrative accusing the government of election fraud.

They added that Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (GFF), political pressure groups based in Berlin and largely funded by Brussels, are actively involved in establishing the disinformation narrative, as is the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), which stated that the Hungarian government “may commit widespread irregularities on election day to tip the results in its favor,” the statement said.

Fact

The Democracy Reporting International (DRI) describes itself as impartial, however, DRI’s funding comes from a mix of EU, pro-EU, and left-leaning donors, with major categories including grants, public funding, EU funding, and other contributions. DRI also receives support from entities like the German Federal Foreign Office, the Dutch Foreign Ministry, and pooled funds such as Civitates (which partners with foundations including Open Society Foundations, Luminate/Omidyar Network, Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and Oak Foundation).

According to the statement,

foreign-funded organizations are recruiting and training activists for this campaign.

Their goal is to mobilize these activists if the election results do not meet the expectations of their financiers or supporters.
