Space Adventure in Eger: Land on Another Planet at the Renewed Digital Planetarium

The Eszterházy Károly Catholic University’s Observatory Science and Experience Center  in Eger (northern Hungary) has received a new digital planetarium system that is unique in Hungary, the higher education institution revealed.

According to the university, the new digital planetarium system, which was handed over on Wednesday, features state-of-the-art technology and software that not only reveals the secrets of the starry sky to visitors, but also allows them to travel through time and space and even “land” on another planet.

The observatory is one of Eger’s most popular tourist attractions, welcoming over 50,000 visitors annually. Two-thirds of them are elementary and high school students, for whom it is particularly important that learning be an enjoyable experience.

The Observatory and Science Experience Center, located in the tower of the university’s Lyceum, already had a starry sky projector with a six-meter-diameter hemispherical shell structure and a projection surface of nearly 57 square meters, Heol recalls.

With this device, the staff were able to give visitors a realistic view of the night sky.

The observatory has now been renovated, and in collaboration with the Italian Skypoint Planetariums, Utazó Planetárium Kft. has installed the new system. The new planetarium in Eger will thus ensure 21st-century education, revealing the mysteries of the cosmos with a new interactive scientific experience.
