Szofi Özbas Wins Gold at the Judo Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi

Judo athlete Szofi Özbas won gold on Saturday in the 70 kg weight class at the Grand Slam competition in Abu Dhabi.

European champion Özbas defeated Britain’s Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown with an ippon in the round of 16, Germany’s Samira Bock with a juko in the quarterfinals, and Greece’s Eliszavet Telcidut with a waza-ari in the semifinals.

In the final, she faced Australia’s Aoife Coughlan, whom she took down with a shoulder throw and won with a waza-ari.

BOM for Hungarian Sports Foundation wrote the following on Facebook:

“Our scholarship holder, Szofi Özbas, has made history once again!
In the final, she defeated Australia’s Coughlan, ranked third in the world, with a waza-ari, winning her third Grand Slam gold medal this year. This makes her the second Hungarian judoka after Réka Pupp to achieve a hat trick – and the first to do so in a single calendar year.”

Özbas has competed in three Grand Slam finals this year and won all of them. Before Abu Dhabi, she triumphed in Baku in February and Tbilisi in March.
