The Hungarian Way is Building a Peace Economy, Says Prime Minister

What we know about 2025 is that it was an extremely eventful year. I attended meetings with the heads of 82 states and governments, and I was also present at 25 summits. This year, it became clear to everyone that an era in international politics had come to an end. Donald Trump’s rise to power dealt the final blow to the old era, Viktor Orbán said in his introduction to the international press conference.

The prime minister said that the rules of the old liberal world order no longer apply and that the new era will be the era of nations. As he explained, one of the most important issues of the new world order in Europe is the question of war and peace. One of the fundamental issues is the question of energy. Alongside sovereignty, this is the most important issue in technological development. Those countries that are able to provide cheap energy sources suitable for these new industries will be the winners of this.

Hungary’s energy supply is guaranteed, and our independence is secure.

As he said, the gas and oil industry regulations are destructive for our country, as they would cut off Hungary’s supply from Russia. We are defending ourselves against this through legal means and are initiating proceedings against the European Commission, because this is a case of abuse on legal grounds.

He continued by saying that we would have to apply the migration pact from June 2026, assess 23,000 applications, set up migrant camps, and take in migrants from the West.

We will not take in a single migrant, we will not change our border protection, and we will not become an immigrant country,”

he stated.

Finally, he said that the issue of development in Hungary in 2026 is a realistic goal, and we should not give up our economic development objectives. You will have money for development if you do not give it to others, which means that we will not give our money to Ukraine. We will not participate in military lending either, as the word “loan” is a deception; we know that they will not pay it back, and we will not send soldiers or weapons either. And we do not accept the transition to a military economy in Brussels, because it does not serve the interests of the countries.

We are building a peace economy, which provides opportunities for development; this is the Hungarian way,”

the Prime Minister emphasized.

Viktor Orbán said that, in the government’s view, the options facing the country are simple. Either we follow the Brussels path, which leads to austerity, or we follow the Hungarian path, the path of peace, which will create a better life in Hungary.

Regarding the 2026 parliamentary elections, Viktor Orbán said that voters will decide on the mandates and who will win.

Our goal is to repeat the 2022 election results,”

he said, adding that he sees no point in debating with someone who is not sovereign.

He spoke about Venezuela being a new manifestation of a new world, a new language. Together with Venezuela, the U.S. is able to control 40-50 percent of the world, which influences the price of energy on the world market. With the country under supervision, a better global market situation could emerge, which is good news. He added that Hungary is doing well in terms of sovereignty, with the most successful wave of investment reaching our country in the last four years, and this is expected to continue in the future.

We do not want to participate in any federal arrangement; sovereign foreign policy and energy policy are important, thus we see ourselves as a member of NATO within the EU. Hungary is a Hungarian country,”

emphasized the prime minister.

Viktor Orbán said that the U.S. has a presidential system, hence all agreements are personal. The prime minister is confident that the agreements will remain in force even after the end of the four-year term. Speaking about the financial protective shield, he said that Hungary needs it because of speculation. A responsible government must think this way, because anything can happen in today’s world.

Viktor Orbán said that he asked Donald Trump for such a protective shield. A plan that is good for both the U.S. and Hungary was not available, thus they are now trying to establish these conditions.

In Viktor Orbán’s view, the first days of last year served as an important reminder that the liberal world order is falling apart, with President Trump’s election delivering the coup de grâce. “However, the new world is still in flux. More turbulent, unpredictable, and dangerous years are ahead. In this situation, the Hungarian people must choose a path in April this year,” he added.

In response to the Slovak government’s measure to punish those who criticize the Beneš Decrees, Viktor Orbán said that Hungarians in Slovakia can count on the support of the Hungarian government.

Collective guilt is not accepted by any government. In his opinion, this Slovak legislation must be understood because the situation is not easy. The prime minister believes that there are 1,000 hectares of farmland where the Beneš Decrees are being used in property disputes. Once he has a clear understanding of the situation, he will also speak with the Slovak president. Until then,  the Hungarian government continues to support the Hungarians in Slovakia and rejects collective guilt.
